After winning the 2022 Los Angeles mayoral election in 2022, Karen Bass became the first woman to serve as mayor of Los Angeles. Prior to that, she served as a U.S. Representative for California and chaired the Congressional Black Caucus during the 116th Congress. Prior to serving in Congress, Ms. Bass made history when the California Assembly elected her to be its 67th Speaker, catapulting her to become the first African American woman in U.S. history to serve in this powerful state legislative role. Throughout her political career, Bass has promoted numerous efforts to improve children welfare systems.
