Brendale McAfee
Survivor of Prostitution
Brendale McAfee began using drugs at the age of twelve, entered the sex trade to support her addiction, and then was tortured so severely in prostitution that she almost lost her life. Now sixty years old, Ms. McAfee is grateful to have been able to escape “the life” with the help and support of Dawn’s Place, and has been drug-free and off the streets since 2010. Given her prostitution-related criminal record, however, finding employment remains a challenge.
“A lot of the women out there are asking for help and need help. When in prostitution, I felt scared to go home and face my mom, son, brothers, and sisters. I hid outside because the choices I made had made me feel dirty and used, but I really hurt my family by not coming home. I would tell girls to NOT go there. I lived through it and it’s not safe for a young person out there. Stay in school and learn as much as you can!”
