The Late Charles J. Ogletree

Former Jesse Climenko Professor of Law Emeritus, Harvard Law School; Founding and Former Faculty Director, Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race & Justice

The late Charles J. Ogletree, former Harvard Law School Jesse Climenko Professor of Law Emeritus and founding and former Faculty Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice (CHHIRJ), was a prominent legal theorist who made an international reputation by taking a hard look at complex issues of law and by working to secure the rights guaranteed by the Constitution for everyone equally under the law.  He opened the CHHIRJ offices in 2005 as a tribute to the legendary civil rights lawyers, mentors, and teachers of such great civil rights lawyers as Thurgood Marshall and Oliver Hill.  Since its launch, the Institute has engaged in a wide range of important educational, legal, and policy issues.

“A lawyer is either a social engineer or a parasite on society.”
