Brendan Shanahan

Hockey Hall of Fame Former NHL Player; Hockey Executive

Brendan Shanahan, a Hockey Hall of Fame former NHL player and hockey executive, served for eleven seasons as President and Alternate Governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs before leaving that role in 2025.  He played 21 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1987 to 2009.  During his career, he captured three Stanley Cup championships, an Olympic gold medal, a World Championship gold medal, and a Canada Cup championship.  Mr. Shanahan was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.  He is leading a 2026 Hockey Canada review of men’s junior hockey in Ontario and has been a longtime supporter of Sanctuary for Families’ work serving victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking.

“We know that sex trafficking often increases during big games.  Athletes have a special responsibility to educate our teams and fans that buying women and girls for sex doesn’t make men cool or powerful.  It lines the pockets of violent traffickers and taints the reputation of the games we love.”
