“Zuli”

Survivor of Sex Trafficking; Taxi Driver; Community Leader

After a childhood of abuse in a South American country, Zuli met a young man when she was sixteen years old who romanced her and promised her a better life in the United States.  After agreeing to accompany him to Florida, he immediately turned her over to a trafficking syndicate, and for six years she was trafficked throughout Florida, sold to 40 or 50 men a day, and beaten and drugged if she attempted to resist.  Her brave escape required a three-hour flight on foot to a Walmart store, where she was able to call in law enforcement, who then arranged for safe shelter for her.  Today, Zuli is a community leader helping other abused women find shelter and services, and providing transportation to those in need.

“My parents assumed I’d just run away.  Take care of your daughters.  Stay in touch, ask questions, don’t assume they’re delinquent.”
